CHARGE for Strawberries

In this 18 week free-living randomized, double-blinded, two-arm, placebo-controlled, and crossover trial study, the main goal is to evaluate the therapeutic effect of strawberries on cardiometabolic (CM) disease risk factors, like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and the ecology of the gut microbiome in higher-risk populations.  The first objective is to assess the effect of strawberry consumption on CM health indicators, including cholesterol, triglycerides, glycemic control, blood pressure, and inflammation.  The second objective will assess the effect of strawberry consumption on gut microbiota composition and plasma markers indicative of cardiovascular and metabolic health that are altered by gut microbiota. The amount and type of strawberry polyphenols will also be assessed in order to confirm absorption of these bioactive metabolites with proven effects on health.  The third objective will seek to evaluate bioavailability of the amount and type of strawberry polyphenols in order to confirm absorption of these bioactive metabolites with proven effects on health.
