Gestational Diabetes
Our lab is involved in multiple research studies investigating gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). GDM, or diabetes that is diagnosed during pregnancy in women who never had diabetes before, can have a combination of adverse perinatal outcomes and long-term increased risk of health issues including elevated risk of obesity and diabetes in the future for both the mother and child. One of our projects seeks to compare plasma samples collected at first trimester from a group of pregnant women that developed GDM and compare these to women that did not develop GDM through the use of metabolomics in order to identify GDM biomarkers. Another project seeks to reduce GDM recurrence through multidimensional interventions in a randomized controlled trial.
